National Nutrition Week Poetry Competition…

National Nutrition Week is all about eating well and living well and is run by Nutrition Australia to raise awareness around the role of food on our health. This year the theme was ‘Tryfor5’ and the aim is to encourage us to eat loads more vegetables.

We celebrated National Nutrition Week (11 – 17th Oct) in the Library with a display loaded with interesting nutritional information and books on cooking, gardening (to grow your own fruit and veggies), and nutrition.

AND… We ran a Poetry Competition asking students to explore the display, learn about healthy eating and nutrition…and write a poem.
We had loads of brilliant entries from all year levels! So thank you to everyone who got creative and healthy, and entered the competition!

Winners !!!

Congratulations to Lola Zebrowski (4C) for submitting a fabulous poem and winning the Major Prize!!
Here is Lola and her family enjoying the lovely fresh fruit and veg box (donated by Don at Amalocal)

And Congratulations to Gigi Morfis and Pippa Trew (2C) for a lovely team effort poem. They won the ‘Amazing Effort’ prize!

Library Lunchtime Roster

To make sure that we are being as safe as possible here at school, being aware of distancing protocols, and limiting the number of students in our spaces….we have rostered different year levels on certain days for lunchtime access to the library.

So make sure to check the schedule and remember what day your Lunchtime Library is!

Indigenous Literacy Day

Wednesday 2nd September 2020

Wednesday 2nd September is Indigenous Literacy Day. It’s a National annual celebration held by the Indigenous Literacy Foundation to celebrate Indigenous culture, stories, language, and literacy.

Join the rest of the school for an excursion (Virtual!!) on Wednesday to attend a very special Indigenous Literacy Day celebration presented in collaboration with the Sydney Opera House.
Check the Blog this week for more information and some Indigenous book readings…

The Indigenous Literacy Foundation

“Only 36% of Indigenous Year 5 students in very remote areas are at or above national minimum reading standards, compared to 96% for non-Indigenous students in major cities, according to the 2018 National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN).

The situation is improving but there is still a long way to go and the challenges are immense.

Apart from the historical, health, social, and educational disadvantage issues, many remote communities don’t have many, if any, books. Most of the remote communities that we work with report there are fewer than five books in family homes.

Our approach to raising literacy levels starts at a community level with Book Supply. Appropriate quality books are gifted to organisations operating in remote communities.

Our Book Buzz program in a WA community shows how giving children under five the right books in their own language, develops early literacy skills.

Through our Community Literacy Projects, we have been able to work with and publish books in many Aboriginal languages: traditional languages, vibrant languages, sleeping languages and new languages, from Walmajarri in the Kimberley region, to Arabana in South Australia, to Kriol in the Katherine region. Learn more here.”

Women in Science – Astrophysicist, Kirsten Banks

65,000 Years of Australian Aboriginal Astronomy

Have you ever wondered how the Indigenous people of Australia described the night sky?
As part of National Science Week, Kirsten Banks explores Aboriginal constellations and the differing perspectives of Western and Aboriginal astronomy in this presentation.

https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=2966392776949056

Who is Kirsten Banks?

Kirsten Banks is a young Astrophysicist of Wiradjuri Heritage with a passion for space and astronomy.

Kirsten’s fascination with the sky started at a very young age. In Primary School she was intrigued by the weather and dreamed of becoming a meteorologist. Her earliest memory of this passion was from one particular day in Kindy class. The teacher had all of the students sitting around in a circle and one by one each of them would stand up and tell the class what they wanted to be when they grew up. Most of the boys would say they wanted to be an astronaut or a fireman, and the girls would say vet or ballerina. When it came to Kirsten’s turn, she stood up and came out with the biggest word any 4 year old knew and said, “I want to be a meteorologist!” From that moment, it was clear that Kirsten was a passionate young girl and nothing was going to stop her from achieving her goals.

Kirsten began her astrophysics career with a Bachelor of Science at the University of New South Wales in 2015. Majoring in Physics, Kirsten learnt about the fundamental workings of the Universe from the smallest atoms to the largest galaxies. She graduated from this program in 2018 and decided that more study was the next step for her, so she enrolled into the Physics Honours program at UNSW. Over 2019 Kirsten studied the evolution of the biggest and brightest galaxies in the Universe and was awarded 1st Class Honours upon completion. Prior to completing this program, Kirsten was accepted into the Scientia PhD program at UNSW and awarded a Scientia Scholarship to continue her studies of the Universe beginning in 2020.
